Whispering Pines Lady Betty
(Retired from Breeding Program)

Whispering Pines Queen Elizabeth (Betty) and I team up to promote students to learn to enjoy reading. We call the program Reading Tails. On a weekly basis students that either struggle or dislike reading sit on a mat with Betty lying between us. To set an upbeat tone the student gives Betty a treat and chooses from a dozen or so bandanas for Betty to wear. The student chooses a book to read to Betty for fifteen minutes. When students struggle with words they most always start petting Betty 😊. I remain quiet and avoid eye contact with the student while they are reading. When they are done, we discuss what the student enjoyed most about the book. We finish with the student choosing a trading card, which includes a picture of one of our dogs along with some fun stats (think baseball trading cards). I suggest for them to read to their dog as most families have a dog. They give Betty another treat and we give the student a piece of candy.
